Style Voices: Emily L. Foley
In this age of social media it's hard to determine the truth behind what people are sharing. Most people only put out into the world the very best versions of themselves and their lives (but did they really "wake up like that"?!), but what's going on behind the scenes? It's for that reason that Emily is a breath of fresh air—on social media Emily seems fun and cheerful, her personality as colorful as the outfits she wears. The best part? She actually IS that way in real life! She's like the friend everyone wants around all the time because she's always happy, and happiness is contagious after all. This mom of two manages to strike the right balance between sharing all the fun details and perks of her life as a beauty blogger/editor, and posting adorable real-life photos of her family. By the end of this interview we guarantee you'll want her as a part of your #squad too.
Name? Emily L. Foley
Married? Kids? Pets? My husband and I met at a karaoke bar–where he was famous for his flawless Beastie Boys performances–twelve years ago, and we’ve been married seven and a half years. We have a five-and- a-half- year-old daughter named Scarlett and 8-month-old son named Edwin, whom I call the Smurf and Guy Smiley, respectively, on social media.
Where do you live? A suburb of Atlanta, GA
Where do you work and what do you do? I am a freelance journalist. What that means for me is that I write for both print and online magazines, and I'm a television lifestyle expert, specializing in all things beauty. Oh and on Monday nights I live-Tweet The Bachelor franchise @EmilyLFoley!
When you wake up on Saturday morning and start your day, what are you typically wearing? Well, since I am a mom (and a nursing mom at that) I have a very definite at-home uniform. It's activewear that I can feel comfy in, but that can also see the light of day if I end up leaving the house or having someone come over for any reason. I really love Onzie tanks—they have several styles that are very loose and open in the back that make for easy access in the front for nursing. Cute and functional!
Is there an item you wear that gets you compliments no matter how many times you wear it? I have an Asian-inspired printed tunic (black with little red flowers and branches) that is at least 5 years old that always gets love when I wear it. It has a huge keyhole in the back and a dramatic high/low angled hemline, so there's lot of visual interest.
Where is your favorite place to shop? The Internet! :) But specifically, Asos.com—a good 80% of my wardrobe is from there.
Where do you get style inspiration? That's a great question and one I really had to think about before answering! Primarily fashion editorials and Instagram. Some of my favorite feeds are Catherine Kung @gildedmaven, Alena Gidenko @modaprints, and Kylee Snelgrove @kyleesnelgrove.
What's the best style advice you've ever been given? "If it makes you happy wear it." This concept is at the core of the saying, "fashion says 'me too' but style says 'only me'". If you like it, make it your own and that's your style. I remember walking down the hall as a college freshman and having a classmate tell me, "I saw you from behind and started making fun of your outfit until I realized it was you. You make it work."
I was wearing a knee-length denim skirt with buttons down the front from American Eagle with a yellow t-shirt that had three green peas on it that said ‘Give Peas a Chance’ from Delia’s, a sky blue sweater hoodie with rainbow detailing from Alloy, rainbow knee-socks from Alloy and black, t-strap, platform Mary Jane creepers from Delia’s (pour one out for Alloy and Delia’s, ammaright, 90s girls?). I definitely don't dress as uniquely as now as I did back then—I need to take cues from my younger self!
If this store went away you would die...what store is it and why? Forever21! I've been getting ridiculously inexpensive trend pieces there since high school, and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon.
What is your signature? Bright colors and prints! Periodically, I have to force myself to buy some solid color staples because I never seem to have any.
We all know beauty goes hand in hand with fashion...what is your no-fail 5-minute beauty routine? I have a different 5-minute routine for different occasions, but here's the one I employ most often: my primer is Clinique Superprimer Colour Corrects Discolourations; my undereye concealer is Pixi Correction Concentrate; my BB cream is Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream; my mascara is Benefit They're Real! Tinted Primer; for my brows I use itCosmetics Brow Powder Universal Eyebrow Pencil; and then I brush MAC Beauty Powder under my eyes and down the middle of my face, just to give my face a little extra life. And yes, that only takes 5 minutes!
