Style Voices: Irene Newman
We met Irene a few years ago and it was girl crush at first sight. Then our relationship progressed via Instagram (as all grown-up friendships do these days) and we really fell in love— her cool-mom style (evidenced in pics with her 3 adorable sons and hunky other half), penchant for red lipstick, and edgy-yet-effortless haircut had us hooked. We know you will be too, so we decided to have her kick off our new series, Style Voices. Every week we'll be chatting with a successful, stylish woman who we could all learn a little something from.
Name: Irene Newman
Married? Kids? Pets? I've been married to Steven Newman for almost 15 years (together for nearly 20, which I can hardly believe sometimes). We have three boys ages 6, 10 and 13. This past year, we adopted our newest baby, our giant lab mix rescue named Diego, after the soccer player Diego Maradona. We also have the coolest Russian Blue cat named Alakay, after Alex, the lion from the movie Madagascar.
Where do you work and what do you do? Hudson's Bay Company—the parent company to Lord & Taylor, Off 5th, and Saks Fifth Avenue. I lead the charge for all categories of women's private brand design.
Do you have a work-week “uniform”? I definitely fall back on the high/low mix concept: take a great-fitting pair of jeans, a well-tailored jacket, a cool basic tee, and then accessorize, accessorize, accessorize.
When you wake up on Saturday morning and start your day, what are you typically wearing? Either I'm headed to the dog park or out for a run, so on Saturdays I'm a bit incognito! That means either a well-worn pair of James Perse joggers paired with an army jacket (one with loads of pockets for dog treats and coffee cups!) and Nike Roshes, or a tee I've earned in a race paired with Nike Epic Run Crops and my "Run Brooklyn" baseball cap to get me over the Brooklyn Bridge and back.
What fashion discovery changed your getting-dressed routine? What I do buy and wear has to work for all aspects of my lifestyle, so when I'm shopping I have to be able to imagine the items working for work and after-hours, too. For example, last year I discovered Amo Jeans, a brand that has a fit and washes that I absolutely love. Since picking up my first pair, I've gone back for more. When you find something that fits, that flatters, and that you love, buy it in multiples!
Where is your favorite place to shop? When I'm not shopping in our own stores, I love the quaint boutique experience and fabulous edit at Bird in Brooklyn. In Paris, I always have to check out the latest installation at Merci and scoop up items for myself and for my home—things you absolutely can't find elsewhere.
Where do you get style inspiration? I always aspire to be Parisienne chic like my favorite cool french girls: Caroline de Maigret and Clemence Poesy.
What’s the best style advice you’ve ever been given? Always be yourself and don't let a trend define who you are. Stick to what's right for you.
If this brand/store went away you would die….what brand/store is it and why? I would die if Isabel Marant disappeared. Not that I buy from her every season, but because her collection is the epitome of quintessential Frenchie cool-girl fashion.
What are your tips for getting dressed every day? Splurge on one great-fitting jacket and a wardrobe of amazing accessories (like jewelry you'll wear for years to come), well-made statement shoes, and an investment bag you reach for on both work and weekend days that pulls any look together.
What is your signature item? An Hermès scarf.
We all know beauty goes hand in hand with fashion. What is your no-fail 5-minute beauty routine? My beauty routine follows the same philosophy as my style credo: high/low mixing. I love my Olay cleansers mixed back to a new find, Clarins Blue Orchid Face Oil, which has the most amazing smell and re-balances your skin. I also love Armani Crema Nuda foundation, a ridiculous but necessary indulgence, paired with Nars lipsticks and mascaras as an everyday three-step beauty regimen.
